What is agarwood?
Agarwood – the Wood of Gods, most commonly referred to as oud, is a fragrant, dark and resinous wood used in incense, perfume, and small hand carvings. It forms in the heartwood of Aquilaria trees after they become infected with a type of Phaeoacremonium mold, P. parasitica. The tree defensively secretes a resin to combat the fungal infestation, and that black resin is agarwood.
The distinct scent that these chips emit when burned as incense makes them extremely valuable. Agarwood is traded for chips, oil, logs, and dust, among other things.
